Fair work research report 2017 in Mt. Kilimanjaro

This summer I decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for PIANO PIANO PROJECT 2017.  Since I was a child I knew that all of the wonderful nature in East Africa was blessed from the God of this mountain. Every time I pass Mt.Kilimanjaro, I was always thinking …one day…one day… Then this year, “one day” came to me.

Tourism is one of the important areas for most successful economies and Tanzania is definitely gifted with wonderful nature.   Usually, tourists visit to experience a Safari or Mt. Kilimanjaro. These holidays are not cheap and many people visit Tanzania for a “trip of a lifetime” experience.

To challenge this mountain, you need guides and porters.  Kilimanjaro porters carry food, water, and equipment. I discovered that in the past porters were treated very badly, forcing under-equipped porters to carry a heavy burden (30-40kg) for holidaymakers.  I admire the non-profit travel agency, Fair Trade Tanzania, who raised this issue clearly and shared some videos about the porter abuse. Thanks to them, we could grasp the idea of what we are asking for and what is the ethically right choice.

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), was established in 2003.  They improve the working conditions of the porters.  KPAP is an initiative of the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC).

Before 2003,  porters came to get work, some traveling from far away on foot. They were not given appropriate shoes and clothes.  Sometimes provided with only one meal in a day and no consideration for their health.  Rather than being required to carry a set weight, the porters would be required to carry as much as they could lift, often between 30-40kg, and their salary was only 3-6 dollars per a day.

 

I spoke with someone who had worked as a porter 20 years ago, they reported that sometimes porters would not receive a wage at all.  At that time porters didn’t have any power to challenge this unfair situation. After the establishment of KPAP porters gained a voice and way to stand up to their unfair treatment. Now 102 responsible travel company became a partner with KPAP (Sep 2017) across the world. Of course, there are many companies who still operate outside of these ethical and fair practices, so please pay good attention when choosing a travel operator to plan your next trip.

KPAP dedicate the following things:

• Lending mountain clothing to porters free of charge
• Advocating for fair wages and ethical treatment by all companies climbing Kilimanjaro
• Encouraging climbers to select a climbing company with responsible treatment practices towards their crew
• Providing educational opportunities to the mountain

Becuase of the schedule we could not plan with Fair Travel but luckily I could found an another company Ultimate Kilimanjaro, which also a partner with KPAP and IMEC.

These companies perform continuous monitoring and oversight during the climb to guarantee compliance with the guidelines. So I strongly recommend finding a company from the registered list which is linked above.

• Porters are paid a minimum of 20,000Tsh per day (US $1 = approx 2,000 Tsh)
• Salaries must be paid within 2 days of the descent of a climb
• A transparent tipping procedure so porters receive the full tip amount intended for them
• Loads carried by the porter should not exceed 20 kg for the company excluding porters personal kit
• Porters are provided with 3 meals per day
• Porters have proper shelter conditions and sleeping equipment
• Porters are outfitted with proper gear
• Sick or injured porters are properly cared for

All of our group were very happy with Ultimate Kilimanjaro, which is one of the partner organizations with KPAP and IMEC.  Six guides, two cooks and thirty-five porters are supporting and look after us.  I was observing how these guidelines were being adhered to fairly and reassured that porters were being well protected.

Our lead guide Robert, who is a Tanzanian, is a natural leader, offering support and encouragement to all of us during our journey.  Another one of his important tasks is to look after the crew as well as the climber.  Every morning he was checking the weight the porters would carry.  While respecting both the client and crew, he explained well about the tipping system.  On the last day, we had a tipping ceremony to pass two envelopes with tips, one handed to Robert for the guides and cooks, the second handed to a representation of porters. After the ceremony, the tip money was counted with a guide, one client and the three porter representatives to check the amount and intended distribution. A good process to ensure a transparent tipping procedure.

I realize now for eight days trekking with 55 members is a big project with huge responsibility for Robert.  He did a great job, always with a smile and nice sense of humor.

Assistant guides: Nicodemus, Maro, Baraka, Godfrid, and Ambrose are all outstanding guides.   I totally trusted and have a maximum respect all of them and they supported us mentally and physically.  We could not make this adventure without them.

I truly recommend these guides and Ultimate Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro is an important economy for local people, socially responsible tourism is important to the tourism industry and increasingly valued by consumers.  Climbers should do research and pay attention to what they are asking people to do on their behalf.  Please don’t take the cheap option to save a few dollars, as this adventure will involve many people.   If we keep this good sense as consumers, then the effect of our tourism will continue into the sunshine.

I hoped for a fantastic trip for everyone involved and that’s exactly what we had.

I hope that Tanzania will grow fairly and positively like the great Kilimanjaro.

 

 

 

 

子供のころから大好きだった東アフリカの動物たちや雄大な自然。この魅力的な地形はキリマンジャロの山の神様から恩恵を受けているんだなあと東アフリカの写真集を眺めていました。 アフリカへ行き来するようになって、いつも見上げていたキリマンジャロ。 いつかは・・・いつかは・・・と思いながら時は流れ、その「いつかは」が今年２０１７年にやってきました。今年に入り、少しずつ準備を始めて、８月２８日にタンザニアのモシに入り、２９日全メンバーが集まりました。私達が選んだのは、レモショルート。３０日から登り始め、９月の満月６日に無事アフリカ大陸の最高峰に立つことができました。

観光業はアフリカ各国において大切な経済リソースであり、タンザニアは自然豊かな土地のおかげでサファリや登山を目的に、世界中から旅行者が訪れ、タンザニア観光業を支えています。 サファリやキリマンジャロ登山をするためにいろんな人・物が関わることになるため、決して安い旅ではありませんが、自然に深く関わり合いながらの冒険は深く心に残ります。

キリマンジャロ登山には、ガイドと数人のポーターが必要になります。ポーターは、登山者とスタッフの食料、水、テント道具などを運んでくれます。私がこの登山の準備を始めたすぐに、キリマンジャロ登山に必要な物質を運ぶために著しく過酷で危険な状況で従事していたポーター達の存在を知りました。 30-40kgの物質を運ぶこともあり、毎年何人かのポーターが命を落とすという事実も。 調べていくうちにFair Trade Tanzaniaという旅行会社がこの問題を取り上げていて、更に深く状況を知ることができました。彼らのウェブサイトから、オーナー自らポーターと同じ重量の荷物をキャンプ地まで運び、いかに過酷かという経験を映像でみることができます。彼らのおかげで、事前にどういったチョイスをするべきか、準備段階でいくらか把握できました。

2003年に設立された、キリマンジャロ・ポーター・アシスタント・プロジェクト（KPAP)はインターナショナル・マウンテン・エクスプローラー・コネクション（IMEP)の先導により、発足しました。以前、ポーター達は仕事を求め登山入り口へ出向き、適した服装や靴を持たないまま、30-40kgの物質を担いで、過酷な山を登りました。そして、その賃金は3-6ドルぐらい。登山者がポーターのティップをガイドに渡してもその１０％しかもらえなかった事もあったそうです。過労死や、凍死したポーターも過去にはいました。とにかくキリマンジャロを登った人なら分かるあの過酷な山道を30kgもの荷物で担いで登るのは、鍛えている強いタンザニア人でも決して容易ではありません。その頃のポーター達は、訴えるすべがなく、訴えようものなら、誰かの力で押し付けられるという、狭いポーター社会での圧力に誰もが立ち上がることができずにいました。 KPAPの発足後、１０２の旅行会社が登録し(２０１７年 ９月現在）、ポーター達の状況は改善されています。もちろん、KPAPに登録せずに未だ改善していない旅行会社があることも事実ですので、旅行会社を選ぶ時に十分気をつけて選んでください。IMEPはキリマンジャロの山だけではなく、他の国の山登山ポーターも支援しているので、参考になります。

KPAPは以下の事を基準に活動しています。

• ポーターへ登山用品などを無料で貸し出す（個人代償となるものと一時交換  自転車、携帯など）
• 旅行会社が倫理的な雇用の仕方をでできるように援護する
• 登山者にスタッフ（ガイド、ポーターなど）を正当に雇用している会社を選ぶ事をアピールする
• 山についての必要な知識を提供する

KPAPに登録している登山専門旅行会社は以下のガイドラインを守ることになっており、継続的に監査も入ります。

1. ポーターの一日の最低賃金は20,000Tsh ($1 = 2000 Tsh)
2. 賃金は登山最終日の二日以内に支払う
3. ティップの支払いを透明化する、ポーターへのティップは全額ポーターへ支払われる
4. ポーターが運ぶ荷物は 20kg を超えてはいけない、ただしポーター私物はこの重量とは別
5. １日3回の食事をポーターに提供する
6. 適切な休息場所と寝具をポーターに提供する
7. 適切な登山用品をポーターは身につける
8. スタッフが登山中病気・けがなどをした場合は適切な処置が速やかに行われる

今回はKPAPの登録しているUltimate Kilimanjaro にお世話になりました。６人のガイド、２人のシェフ、３５人のポーター。８日間共に山頂を目指し、私達登山者を、心身共にケアしてくれました。 ８日間上記の事が果たして本当に行われいるのだろうかと調査しましたが、１から８まで、全てしっかりと守られていました。

チームの指揮をとる、リードガイドのタンザニア人ロバートは、この仕事のために生まれてきたような人で、みんなを守り、励まし、登山、下山までしっかりと支えてくれました。登山者ばかりではなく、ロバートのもう一つの大切な仕事であるポーター達のケアもしっかりおこなっていました。ポーターが運ぶ荷物の重量測定にも、毎朝ロバートや他のガイドが立ち会っていました。

そして、ティップに対して、登山者側とスタッフ側の両者の気持ちをふまえながら説明してくれました。最後のティップセレモニーで登山者グループからロバートへ、ポーター用とガイド用と二つの封筒をみんなの前で渡すのですが、セレモニー後、登山者、ポーター、ガイドそれぞれから数人が立ち会い、お金がきちんとポーターの手に渡っていました。ティップの透明化はこのように行われています。 行程８日間、総人数５５名の登山という大きなプロジェクトでしたが、リーダー、ロバートの任務と責任はとても大きいことが、後になって良くわかりました。そして、登山中は笑顔とタンザニア特有のユーモアが絶えない人でした。

そして、アシスタントガイドのニコ、マロ、バラカ、ゴッドフリー、アンブロスもロバートと変わらずみんなをしっかりと支えてくれました。彼らの笑いや、歌声は、心身共に辛かったサミットの日に響いていました。精神的に、体力的にも、彼らがいなかったら、この登山は完結できなかったでしょう。彼らの人格も然ることながら、スタッフの教育、育成がきちんと行われていることがよく分かります。 Ultimate Kilimanjaro はオススメです。

キリマンジャロは地元の人の大切な経済リソースになっています。観光や旅行へ行く側と受け入れる側の、正しい理解と責任があれば、裏表のない素晴らしい旅になり、そういう正しい観光業が地元支援にも繋がります。 だから、旅する人はしっかりと調べ、行動に責任をもつことが大切ですね。単に安い値段のオプションを目にした時、果たしてお金の行先はどこへ、特定の人だけが「得した」だけで成り立つのかと、常に疑問を持つことも大切だと思います。

「楽しかった」の先に、だれかが苦しい思いをしていませんように。

タンザニアという国が、公正に前向きにキリマンジャロの山のように伸びていきますように。

Summer report 2017 – African Vision Malawi

We are happy to report that we donated to African Vision Malawi this summer from our sales so far.

To find out more about the charity go to African Vision Malawi website. I appreciate if you have a look at their massive effort in Malawi.

The donation will be used for two categories as follows:

• Education –  helping make a better future for people.  We donated for school packs with resources and curriculum for children.
• Water aid – without water people can’t do anything.  For now, 36 boreholes have been installed, delivering clean water to an estimated 17,600 people. The money will be used towards fixing broken boreholes in the area.

Thank you so much for your support and may all living beings be safe and free from danger.

 

PIANOPIANOのプロダクトをお買い上げいただいた利益の中から20％を今回アフリカンビジョン マラウイというチャリティに寄付しました。 寄付したお金がどう使われるのか透明に見えるチャリティー団体をここ数年探していました。素敵な縁があり、繋がる事ができたアフリカビジョンマラウイは、衛生、水、教育などの面のサポートをマラウイ中心部で意欲的に活動しています。

今回の寄付金の行先は二つです。

• 教育ー 子どもたちが学校で使う道具などのリソース
• 水 ー 井戸を掘リ、安全な水が飲めるようにマラウイ首都リロングウェ36箇所で井戸試掘が行われており、約17600人の人が利用できるようになったそうです。今回の寄付金はその井戸修復のために使われます。

全ての人にとってのチャレンジはサバイバルすること。生きていくために、「お金」という存在を、どういう風に循環させるといいのだろうと、PIANOPIANOのプロジェクトを進める度に考えています。 それを進められるのは支えてくれる人達がいるこそできる事です。感謝の気持ちが溢れると共に、全ての命ある物が安全な場所で生きることができますようにと願うばかりです。

 

Artisan small bag – Chikumbuso Widows & Orphans Project

I encountered the project called Chikumbuso, a grassroots project in Ng’ombe, Zambia, which provides an alternative lifestyle to the most vulnerable women and children in the township.

Through skill training, micro enterprise supports their artists and their families and brings money back into the project.  The first priority for the group became finding a means of making money. They had little formal education and leaned on artistic skills. The handbag project began with just a few recycled Shoprite bags, a crochet hook and a pair of scissors. Today, the group has grown to 45 widows and 25 at risk youth making beautiful handcrafted items.

I have been using another bag from Chikumbuso for five years, it doesn’t become old and it is waterproof.

Most of the bags were sold out before introducing on our website. This is the last bag.  It has a small pocket inside the bag, this is not on sale on our website.  The price was £39 but now £30.   Please contact us if you would like to purchase this wonderful bag.

Tropics – Dr. Mpalive Msiska

A beautiful poem book was delivered into my hand from Mpalive Msiska who be a poet, literati and one of my wonderful friends from Malawi.

When I opened the book, beautiful, powerful and slightly sharp words about nature, feelings and sensations appeared before my eyes, as if shining like the lake of Malawi.

The poems within the book titled Tropics include titles such as “Banana Leaf “, “Moon song” and “Malawi”.

I just want to share with you one of his poems.

-Malawi-

Tonight my heart is neither 

In the lush green 

Fields of Mulange nor Nyica

Or in the glistening 

Waters of the shire or Songwe,

Nor the blue cal, 

Expanse of our lake.

For the lion has

Trampled on the tendrils of Joy

Uprooted the sweet- smelling flowers

Of our garden,

Muddied the mountain brooks

〜

Pip though the chink

In the wall between Yesterday and tomorrow,

Read the palms of our country,

There is neither thunder nor silence,

The rain is cleansing the waters,

In the book, there are so many enchanting phrases like the eternal nature, wild animals, shining sun contrast to darkness.  It feels new for me to be touched by these words. They made my imagination spread and remind me of my dream of Africa.

When I read this poem, I felt that his passion, his wonder for chasing the light and hope in Africa through literature. As you know, there are many difficult situations in some parts of Africa but the beauty and connection with nature exist which you can feel and becomes your dream of Africa in Malive’s poem.

One day, in the near future, I wish for the children in Malawi to take in their hands this book of poetry and touch these words. Finding the beauty of language they can realise the way to describe their own sensations.

*Orton Chirwa was a lawyer and political leader after independence in Malawi. After a dispute with Malawi’s autocratic President Hastins Kamuzu Banda, he and his wife Vera were exiled. After being kidnapped abroad they were tried in Malawi on charges of treason and sentenced to death. After spending nearly eleven years on death row in Malawi, Orton Chirwa died in prison on 20 October 1992.

 

PIANOPIANO has started providing teaching aides for school in Malawi. We are collabroting on a design to help young students learn life changing reading and writing skills.

 

２０１４年の秋の夜、アフリカ文学の学者の一人、そして尊敬する同僚でもあり友人のパリヴィアから、彼が出版した一冊の本をもらいました。　

この詩集の本のタイトルは「トロピックス」。

本を開けて読んでみると、そこには鋭く、力強く、美しく、アフリカの自然や動物の描写とともに、彼の気持ちを詩った言葉の連なりが、マラウイ湖のように　キラキラ輝いていました。

今日はその中の詩の一つを、自分なりに翻訳し、紹介します。

〜マラウイ〜

今夜の私の心はどこにあるのだろう

青々とした

緑のムランジェの高原やニイカの草原にもなく

キラキラ光る

シャイアやソンウエの川の水の中でもなく…

青く穏やかな

私達の愛するマラウイ湖の広々とした水面にでもない

一匹のライオンが　私の前に立ちはだかっている

喜びの渦巻きの上に

私達の庭の

引き抜かれてしまった花の甘い薫りが残っている

濁った山の小川

しかし　何かが　遠くに見える

血まみれのカーペットから

かすかな明かりが

昨日と明日の壁の境目に何かの明かりが

私達の国の将来を手の平にみる

“Malawi- Mpalive Msiska　(1993) For Vera and Orton* “

*この詩はマラウイの弁護士であり、政治のリーダーでありながら、迫害を受け牢獄の中で生涯を終えた Orton Chirwa と　その妻であるVera に捧げられています。

この詩をよんだ時、政治も社会も混沌とした時代だった マラウイに育ち、アメリカやイギリスに移りながらも文学を通してアフリカでの光を追いかけているパリヴィアの彷徨い、そして情熱を感じました。

彼の詩の中には、アフリカの雄大な自然、動物達の引用、輝く太陽と夜の暗闇などが、たくさんでてきます。アフリカのネガティブなニュースがメディアから濁った川のように流れる今日。でも、私やパリヴィアの脳裏にあるのは、「アフリカの美しくたくましい光」。そして、その「光」の中で生きている人々や動物が、今日もそこにあることを、忘れない願いを込めて。いつの日か、子ども達がこの本を手にとり、言葉で表現する喜びに触れる日がきますように。

日本の方達にも、是非読んでほしい詩集です。「アフリカの光と夢ー　トロピックス」

PIANOPIANOは、マラウイの子どもたちの識字率向上を支援するプロジェクトを始めました。

Malawi floods

Southern Malawi, including Mangochi where we make PIANOPIANO bags, has been hit by bad floods with roads being washed away and badly damaged.   At least 170 people were killed and a great many people are still missing, a lot of people injured and many have lost their homes and all they had.  The road from the main road was under 50cm of water.  Now in Malawi it is the rainy season although this year was extreme and they had very heavy rain for 12 hours then continuous rain for seven more days.

This disaster is due to the extreme weather, we can see more extreme weather around the world during that one week, 14th January to 20th January.  There was flooding in Malawi and Mozambique, unusually low temperature in China and Thai, unusually high temperature in Brazil and eastern China.  In this situation, I realise that we live the life we are meant to live.

What do human beings think when we feel “we are alive”. And do we think differently when we feel “we can survive” from when we feel “we are alive”?

I pray for everybody affected and hope the circumstances will get better sooner than soon…

 

PIANOPIANOのかばんを作っているマンゴチという町を含むマラウイ南部、そしてモザンビーク南東部を暴雨と大洪水が襲い、少なくとも１７０人が命を失い、いまだ行方不明の人々、そして多くの人々が家を失ってしまいました。　国の半分に匹敵する場所で大洪水が起こり、道路や橋が押し流されてしまいました。主要道路は５０センチもの水下になり、身動きが取れない状態のようです。感染症のリスク、食料・飲料水の不足、医療施設の混乱と最悪の状態が続いています。 　望んでいた雨が、こんな形で降り続き、ゆっくりした津波のように川が洪水を起こし、人々の命を飲み込む惨事になってしまいました。

これらの惨事は、世界の異常気象によるものだそうで、1月14日から20日までの1週間に発生した世界の異常気象は、モザンビーク・マラウイの「洪水」、タイや中国大陸での異常低温、中国東部やブラジルでの異常高温、雨が降らないなど異常気象が世界で8件。

人間は「生きている」と感じた時に、何を思うのか。そして生かされていると感じた時に何を感じるのか。　生きているだけで幸せなんだと、生かされている命が尊く思われる１週間でした。

犠牲になった方々のご冥福をお祈りすると共に、一刻も早い復興をお祈りしています。

WORK APRON – PIANOPIANO IN MALAWI 2014

 

WORK APRON is the product of PIANOPIANO in 2014 using the traditional African batik textiles.

With African batiks wax is traditionally used to draw lines on the fabric and then the uncovered space are died with permanent colours.  This allows both sides of the material have the same image when the wax is removed. As wax has more important uses and is expensive to purchase, the people in Malawi instead use starch paste.  The paste is most often used from cassava flour or rice.

WORK APRONにはPIANOPIANOで既にお馴染みでもある、アフリカで使われる技法で布の模様を使っています。

以前はろうけつ染めの手法が使われていましたが、臘が高価なため、アフリカ全域では　身近に手に入る、キャッサバ粉、小麦粉、米粉　などを使って、ペーストを作り、バティックパターンが作られるようになりました。

Each Apron, as well as the PIANOPIANO bags, display a unique design.  You won’t find the exact same pattern no matter how hard you search!  To make a cracked pattern it needs a heavy amount of pressure and a great deal of time to provide the desired pattern.

PIANOPIANOの１つ１つのエプロン/バックは、それぞれの布のパターンが全て微妙に違い、ユニークです。

小麦粉を割る作業は、力仕事でもあります。　割れすぎないように、きをつけます。

 

Each product is made by hand using cotton, which once died becomes hard and taught as a result of drying under the Malawi sun !

This time, I visited Malawi for the new PIANOPIANO production and could first proceed with local research.

As usual, I was treated by a peaceful and stable breeze from Lake Malawi and surrounded by the Malawian people’s beautiful smile and hospitality.

今回の夏のマラウイでは、PIANOPIANOの新しいプロダクションと、現地のリサーチをして来ました。　また新たな経験ができ、お世話になった方達や、ワークショップのメンバーに感謝しています。

相変わらずの、ゆったりとしたマラウイ湖の風。　人々の笑顔。

私自身がいろいろなことを学ばせてもらう滞在でした。

something which makes you feel comfortable

something that looks cool!

今回のテーマは　”仕事”。　ずっと、ワーク服を作りたいなと思っていました。　　仕事中に素敵なインスピレーションが湧くようなワーク服。

Carefully we measured and cut the fabric so not to waste precious cotton. The design is thoughtful, so both women and men can wear it comfortably.

コットンは貴重なもの。無駄がでないように採寸、そして布を裁ちます。そしてなおかつ、メンズでもさっとはおれるように考慮して、パターンを作りました。

Spring has come in London slowly slowly.. Now, it may make you realise that it’s the time for spring cleaning !   Here is the one of useful Basket from Malawi in my everyday life. For house cleaning, laundry and gardening.

ロンドンに少しずつ春が訪れています。日本では大晦日に大掃除をしますが。寒い国のヨーロッパでは、春がきて、掃除をします。長い冬の埃などを、一気に春に掃除するのです。

さて、その掃除にとても役に立つマラウイのバスケット。柔らかくて、たくさん物が入って、懐かしい畳の匂いのするバスケットです。役に立つので、３つぐらい使っています。ランドリーや、ガーデニングなどに、重宝するバスケット達です。
